A dental implant replaces a missing tooth with a titanium artificial root placed in the jawbone and a fixed prosthesis fitted on top. It can be used for a single tooth, several teeth or complete tooth loss. Because the implant needs to fuse with the bone (osseointegration), treatment is usually spread over a few months; planning is done with 3D CT imaging (CBCT). What is it

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed in the jawbone. This screw takes the place of the missing tooth and, after a healing period, fuses with the bone (osseointegration); a personalised fixed prosthesis is then fitted on top. The aim is a function and appearance close to a natural tooth.

In international long-term studies, dental implants show an average 10-year survival rate above 95% (systematic review and meta-analysis, Journal of Dentistry, 2019). Individual success varies from person to person, depending on oral hygiene, smoking and jawbone condition.

An implant does not require cutting down the neighbouring healthy teeth.

Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant stands on its own and the surrounding teeth are preserved. Replacing a missing tooth with an implant also stimulates the jawbone, helping to slow bone loss. Preserving healthy tissue is the foundation of our approach.

Why does an implant protect the neighbouring teeth?

The traditional way to replace a missing tooth is a bridge — which means cutting down the healthy teeth on either side. An implant stands on its own root, without touching those teeth.
