What is it

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial tooth root made of titanium that is placed in the jawbone. This screw takes the place of the missing tooth and, after a healing period, fuses with the bone (osseointegration); a personalised fixed prosthesis is then fitted on top. The aim is a function and appearance close to a natural tooth.

In a 2019 systematic review and meta-analysis of 10-year follow-up studies (Howe et al., Journal of Dentistry), dental implant survival was high; it was lower in people aged 65 and over. Individual success varies from person to person, depending on oral hygiene, smoking and jawbone condition.

An implant does not require cutting down the neighbouring healthy teeth.

Unlike a traditional bridge, an implant stands on its own and the surrounding teeth are preserved. Replacing a missing tooth with an implant also stimulates the jawbone, helping to slow bone loss. Preserving healthy tissue is the foundation of our approach.

Why does an implant protect the neighbouring teeth?

The traditional way to replace a missing tooth is a bridge — which means cutting down the healthy teeth on either side. An implant stands on its own root, without touching those teeth.

The Dentology Approach

Not having to grind down the neighbouring healthy teeth just to replace one tooth is a significant gain.

The core principle of our approach is to use irreversible procedures only when they are genuinely needed. An implant is a surgical procedure and may not suit every case; but when it does, it does not require cutting the neighbouring healthy teeth, and by stimulating the jawbone it helps slow bone loss. Why is the exact system chosen case by case? You agree the tier with us before you travel. Within that tier, each implant system has its own surface, connection and geometry; the right system and line can only be selected after an in-person examination and a 3D CT scan (CBCT), taking bone volume and the needs of the case into account. Each implant is covered by its manufacturer's guarantee.

Common questions

Placing the implant is usually done in a single session under local anaesthesia. The implant then needs time to fuse with the bone (osseointegration), which generally takes a few months; the fixed prosthesis is fitted after that. The total time depends on your bone condition and the individual case.

The procedure is carried out under local anaesthesia, so pain is generally not felt during placement. Mild swelling or tenderness is possible for a few days afterwards; this can be managed with the care your dentist recommends.

Not always. An implant needs sufficient jawbone; where the bone is lacking, bone support may be needed first, or alternatives such as a bridge are considered. Suitability is determined by an examination and a 3D CT scan (CBCT).

The price depends on the system chosen, the complexity of the case and any additional procedures (for example whether bone support is needed) — so it is not possible to give everyone a single figure. Your exact, personal price is confirmed only after an in-person examination and planning with a 3D CT scan (CBCT).

Before you travel home you receive an implant passport — a written record of the exact implant system, size and position used — so any dentist, anywhere, knows precisely what is in place. The implant itself is covered by the manufacturer's guarantee of the brand used. And you have a remote follow-up route to us: you can send photos and describe any concern, and we review them and advise on the next step. We do not promise a named partner dentist in your country, because we will not claim a network we do not have.

The tier is the only difference between our price levels — the zirconia crown is the same on each — and you agree it with us before you travel. Within a tier, the exact system and line are decided after the examination and 3D CT scan, and it is written into your treatment plan so any dentist can identify it later. Each implant is covered by its manufacturer's guarantee.

We only use CE-marked zirconia blocks from manufacturers based in the EU, Japan or the USA, and the same material is used on every price tier — a lower-priced implant tier does not mean a different crown. We deliberately do not tie our website to a single brand name: the block is supplied by our laboratory partners, and we would rather tell you exactly what was used than promise something a third party could change. So the brand is written in your treatment plan before you travel, and the block's lot number is kept in your file so any dentist can identify it in the years ahead.
